Douglas Students’ Union Celebrates Menstrual Equity on Campus!

The Douglas Students’ Union would like to acknowledge the recent victory on campus for all members of the Douglas College community. Douglas College has agreed to fund and supply emergency menstrual products to all washrooms on the Coquitlam and New Westminster Campuses.

“Douglas College is proud to be taking this important step in making our spaces more equitable for all students.  The cooperation between Douglas College and the Douglas Students Union was key to ensuring that period products for students are accessible, so students have what they need to take care of themselves and can be successful in their studies.” – Sarah Dench, Vice President Student Affairs.

The Douglas Students’ Union has been a leader throughout this campaign. In collaboration with the BC Federation of Students and The United Way, they have been advocating through the efforts of the Period Promise Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to provide free access to students at no cost in all gendered and non-gendered washrooms on post-Secondary campuses’. The Douglas Students’ Union has been providing menstrual products to students since 2017.

In September 2021, the Douglas Students’ Union prepared a proposal for the Senior Management Team, asking the College to fund and supply emergency products in all washrooms at all campuses. The DSU asked the College to demonstrate leadership in combating stigma and period poverty through creating an equitable environment for all. The Senior Management Team was excited to receive the proposal and has officially installed 50 free dispensers in all of the washrooms as of March 25th 2022.

By ensuring that Douglas College provides a welcoming environment to students who manage normal biological functions without interference to their academic success; Douglas College has taken a step of leadership that institutions can look towards as an example. “Douglas College’s decision to be a leader and work on breaking the stigmas around menstruation is [a] great step towards change in our society.” – Mehre Dlir, DSU Director of External Relations.
