DSU STATEMENT

Condemning the ethnic-based violence, gender-based violence and anti-LGBTQ violence happening in South Sudan.

DOUGLAS STUDENTS’ UNION STATEMENT – Condemning the ethnic-based violence, gender-based violence and anti-LGBTQ violence happening in South Sudan.

The conflict in South Sudan is more complex and nuanced than a few sentences in a statement can adequately describe. After gaining independence, tensions arose between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and have boiled over into a civil war. The conflict is rooted in deep political and ethnic tensions exacerbated by the bloody legacy of colonial imperialism.

What is easier to speak about is the way that the ongoing conflict is affecting civilians and students in Sudan and here at Douglas College. This conflict has also coincided with multiple natural disasters in the region, further worsening food insecurity for its most vulnerable population, and additional food insecurity by disrupting agricultural projects and limiting the import of essential goods. Approximately 2.3 million people have fled South Sudan and now live as refugees in surrounding countries. Another 1.8 million people are currently displaced within South Sudan itself, fleeing the conflict in major city centres to camps, small villages and in the bush.

As with many conflicts, minority groups, women, and children are disproportionately affected. Young people’s right to education has been disrupted, and their physical and mental health is not being looked after. Women face increased risk of gender-based violence and lack resources to manage menstrual health, fertility and deliver their children safely. LGBTQ+ Sudanese find themselves cut off from vital community and health care in major city centers, are subject to homophobic and transphobic violence, and frequently are rejected from non-LGBTQ+ run refugee camps.

The Douglas Students’ Union condemns the ethnic-based violence, gender-based violence and anti-LGBTQ violence happening in South Sudan. We encourage students to educate themselves on the conflict, remain informed about the ongoing struggles faced by South Sudanese civilians and to support ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region.

We also encourage members to check on their Sudanese friends and their families, as many may be directly or indirectly affected by this crisis. Even sharing information can be a powerful act of advocacy.

For any students or their families who are currently being affected, please know that the Students' Union is here to support your mental, physical, and educational wellness. You are an important member of our student community, and support is available to you.
